Tips on Becoming Better at Any Martial Arts

As martial artists, the journey is all about improving yourself and becoming better. No matter what you are striving to keep on pushing yourself and becoming better is the ultimate goal. However, it sometimes feels like you are stuck in the same spot, which is very annoying. So, here are some tips you can follow to become better at martial arts, no matter what it is.

Training after the class

Practice makes perfect, this is absolutely true. More time you give to practice more chances of getting better and once you know it all you’ll definitely be better than others. This can be achieved with some extra training, other than class. After or before the class you can spend some extra time warming up and trying to perfect those moves and techniques. You might be thinking of doing it in regular clothes, no don’t. Always wear the proper gear and GI, for instance, if you are practicing MMA wear MMA gear and GI.

Now it does not specifically mean to get no the mats and do the techniques, yes that is an option and as already mentioned you should wear proper gear while doing it but there are other ways too. Watching videos online and analyzing people, their style and how you can do it, asking your trainer about the weaknesses and figuring out how to overcomes those are some options to try out.

Consistency

Being consistent and not giving up is what differentiates doers from doer and dreamer. Trying to improve in every class is a good place to start. Going to the gym or dojo, whatever you have joined, at least three to four times a week is crucial. No matter how small or slow the progress is, at least you are progressing. Think you are stuck in the same spot, talk to your trainer or sparring partner or both and see what you can change and do get better. Which brings us to the next point.

Choosing sparring partner

When choosing your sparring partner to be a little choosy. Select the partner that you think is better than you. This way you can really know where you stand. Sometimes we feel like stuck in the same spot because the sparring partner, who you’ve been sparring with for some time, can predict your movements and knows how to get out of the locks. Thus, a change of partner after some time is a good way to get better. Try picking stronger, better, and someone who you think can beat you. The idea here is to bring some change in the routine and what you usually do, studying others and altering your game accordingly. Challenging yourself like that is a good way to get better.

Trying new things

The thing about the same routine is that our brain and body get used to it and after that, it is no longer a challenge. Thus because of the same routine, you are losing the potential. So, bring some change in the routine, like challenge yourself, increase the intensity, change the sparring partner, try different techniques and moves, find different ways to deal with the situation. Many of us are afraid to change it for better and yet complain that it feels they are not improving. All you have to do is get one step out of the comfort zone.

For instance, an MMA fighter can change and try some BJJ workout grappling perhaps, or learn how to jab and duck with boxing. Set and work towards a goal

Short term goals are crucial, not just having them but work set short term goals and work towards it because they are the ones that will take you to long term goals. Plus, in the journey or getting close to your goal you’ll get better. The important thing to note is setting a clear and achievable goal.

Let’s do it this way, set an achievable goal for every week, like perfecting or at least getting better than at a technique, let’s say rear-naked choke or D’arce. When you have achieved it, set another and work towards it. If it was not possible, go easy on yourself and try again this week. I hope you learned and will follow these, see you on the mats!
